Dr. Liao's group studies the ecology and evolution of microbiomes and foodborne pathogens at the interface between natural and food-associated environments, including how foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes transfer across different environments. We aim to understand the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms underlying microbial diversity and microbe-environment interactions and apply these knowledge to development engineering tools to help improve sustainability, food safety, and public health.
